The most delicious red you have never heard of

The most delicious red you have never heard of
A candidate for the most delicious red you have never heard of and an absolute must for those craving a light red for summer drinking, Rossese di Dolceacqua is a sumptuously juicy wine of unique character from Italy’s Ligurian coast.

Discovered on a short stop in Liguria last year, on the way back from an annual Tuscan expedition, this Rossese from arch-exponents Terre Bianche took our buyers completely by surprise. It proved so individual and elegant, so disarmingly easy to enjoy that they felt compelled to introduce it to our portfolio.

Thought to be the same as the provencal rose grape Tibouren, Rossese’s home is Dolceacqua and here it makes for some strikingly beautiful wines. Aromatic rose-flecked perfume on the nose, silky and alluring red cherry and blood orange flavours on the palate with sweet notes of griotte and more savoury chalky touches. This is both light and intense. Very soft in texture, the grape being naturally low in tannin, this is at its best young but does have the ability to age well for up to three to four years in bottle thanks to its mineral bite and crisp acidity. Grown in a stunning location at 400 metres above sea level, nestled between mountain and sea, planted on a mixture of red clay and blue marl soils, this is an authentic, soft yet tangy wine of great character and delicacy.

Founded in 1870 by Tommaso Rondinelli, Terre Bianche is a family estate perched high above the small town of Dolceacqua in Liguria, the stunning hillsides of the Italian Riviera. Today production is managed by Filippo Rondinelli, who took over from his father Claudio in the late nineties. Their 10ha are spread over a wide variety of soils including blue marl and white and red clay. The vineyards are sheer, rocky and are grown at altitude. Extreme viticulture which requires passion, dedication and attention to detail, qualities the Rondinelli family have in abundance. The regular Rossese is fermented and aged in steel tank to preserve its fruit and lightness.
