The renaissance of Pichon Comtesse
15 March 2017

Last week we were fortunate to stand the in the tasting room at Pichon Comtesse overlooking the vines of Chateau Latour with one of the absolute superstars of the Medoc, Nicolas Glumineau. Nicolas’ exploits at Montrose are impressive – two 100 point wines in as many years. Now he is firmly established in Pauillac and we are witnessing a renaissance at this great second growth Chateau.

We were presented with a flight of Grand Vins and Reserve de la Comtesse from 2014, 2015 and the magical 2016, but more about the 2016 in a month’s time… The 2014s are graceful, elegant, floral, with classical lines that really appeal to our palates - it is easy to become enraptured. However, when one proceeds to the 2015s, the difference in quality becomes quite evident. The 2015s possess the same laser like precision, gorgeous floral aromatics and Pichon poise, but there is greater plushness and lustre to the fruit, a hint of decadence, all wrapped in the most glorious tannic structure that caresses the mouth. It is pure silk in a glass. If you didn’t buy these wines en primeur, you should be kicking yourself, they are quite possibly the purest and finest expression of Pauillac money can buy.
