Thirteens for Thrill-Seekers

Volcanic ash, impenetrable rock, an elevation of a thousand metres above sea level, vines over one hundred years old; these are all features of the Mount Etna wine landscape, a magical place that is extreme in every vinous way. Throw in the hairy conditions that characterised the 2013 season and you have the winemaker’s equivalent of walking the high wire.

The year was turbulent to say the least, however, the saving grace of many a vintage in France over the last decade this time came to Sicily’s aid – the Indian summer. Mother Nature deserves credit, but so too do Tenuta delle Terre Nere. Whilst wine lovers of today buzz with excitement over the quality of Etna’s wines, Terre Nere were taking a terrifying leap of faith in 2002, their first vintage. They were pioneers, now everyone is at it. Their greatest quality has been to regularly coax such distinctive identities from their different terroirs so that, even in extreme vintages conditions such as 2013, the vineyard personalities shine through brightly: Be it Santo Spiritu’s epicurean beauty; Guardiola’s steadfast austerity or Calderara’s brazen power.
