Weingut Birgit Eichinger's 2018s
08 October 2019

Weingut Birgit Eichinger was founded in 1992 and now comprises 15 hectares of prime Kamptal vineyards. The style here is one of full bodied purity, particularly her exceptionally salty, richly textured Grüner Veltliners, which hail from the loess and loam slopes that dominate the Kamptal region. Winemaking is precise and modern, aiming for purity and freshness through almost exclusive use of temperature controlled stainless steel fermentations and aging. Well-regarded amongst her peers, Birgit is a member of a renowned group of women winemakers in Austria; a close network that enables exchange of know-how and expertise, in order to support each other and develop cutting-edge practices in the vineyards and the cellar. Furthermore, the winery is a member of the eminent Österreichische Traditionsweingüter (OTW), the union of Austria’s top wineries and the first to catalogue the best vineyard sites as Erste Lagen.

Birgit Eichinger’s wonderful Grüner Veltliners are wines of finesse and strong character. Right from the entry level Strass Grüner, a village level wine, the grapes are all hand harvested, picked early and on acidity. It delivers a bright, zesty and spicy-salty expression of Grüner, a wholesome blend of sites planted on loess, gneiss, sandstone and granite raised in stainless steel for freshness. She also produces a rarely-seen variety called Roter Veltliner, an ancient cultivar, which is most aromatic when planted on heavier loess and loam soils. With air, this single vineyard bottling delivers a basket full of fruit; pears, apples, gooseberries, greengages and a little bit of mango, mingling with fresh herbs – dry and multi-faceted aromas. It is of course the Grüner Veltliners that the estate is most famous for, and we are delighted to offer the new 2018 Erste Lagen releases. 2018, as in other parts of Europe, is a warm sun-kissed vintage yielding full bodied, velvety wines. Ried Strasser Gaisberg is one of the most famous sites of the region, with crystalline, mineral soils atop loess. With its peppery and tobacco driven flavours, this is a traditional Grüner Veltliner with a creamy texture and floral top notes. Finally, Ried Lamm is a gently sloping single vineyard site at the foot of the Heiligenstein mountain. Lower yielding and more concentrated as a result, Lamm 2018 is built around sweet spices and yellow fruit cut with a herbal, lime leaf and salted bell pepper edge, typical of top Grüner Veltliner. It is fermented in large traditional oak and kept on the lees for four months before bottling to maintain freshness.
