Wines to make you Fürsty
21 September 2021

Our second German Spatburgunder offer in as many weeks comes courtesy of Weingut Rudolf Fürst and their new 2019 releases. A small family domaine that can trace its winemaking roots back almost four hundred years, Sebastian Fürst has wine-lovers swooning over the quality of his outrageously good Pinot Noirs year-after-year. Since taking over the family domaine from his father Paul in 2007, Sebastian exhibits a similarly magic touch when it comes to drawing out the finer elements of Franken’s traditionally rustic, red sandstone soils. We loved the cask samples we tasted, each wine displaying a nimble but complex prowess that reaffirmed our view of 2019 as an excellent vintage for reds as well as whites. The year was warm and dry, producing grapes of exceptional health and ripeness. Lower yielding than 2018, for example, the 2019s’ natural concentration and polish is elevated further by Fürst’s preference for high density planting, green harvesting and intense canopy management; efforts in pursuit of finer tannins, more intense fruit, and purer, more sophisticated wines. It is a policy that undoubtedly works. Very often mistaken for Burgundy, albeit perhaps a little more texturally sleek, these 2019 Spatburgunders are undoubtedly world class – and a must for any lover of Pinot Noir and Spatburgunder alike.    Read More
