The Singleton 53-Year-Old

The oldest ever release from Singleton

The 53 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky is the first in the Paragon of Time Collection. From 1964, the Singleton 53 was drawn from a single oak hogshead cask from the Dufftown distillery and represents both the oldest and the rarest expression of The Singleton in existence. There are just 117 available globally, so owning a bottle of this one-of-a-kind Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a chance for connoisseurs and collectors to own a part of The Singleton’s history.

Exceedingly rare and precious Single Malt Scotch Whisky

This single cask was filled in 1964, just as Beatlemania was in full swing and the UK and France announced their commitment to building a tunnel under the English Channel. Over five decades of history have taken place while this cask has rested, waiting its moment of bottling. As the very first in the Paragon of Time Collection, this ultra-rare run of just 117 bottles reveal the true power of time in creating exceedingly rare and precious Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

Presented in a crystal decanter and housed in a wooden presentation case, with a piece of the original cask incorporated into the design, the one of a kind, collectable bottles will also be delivered accompanied by a signed certificate of ownership from The Singleton’s Master of Malts Maureen Robinson.

“The Singleton 53 is an outstanding malt whisky - fragrant, exotic, complex and totally delicious. Long maturation in the right cask develops unique flavours which only time can manifest, and this is certainly the finest whisky from this distillery I have ever encountered. A rare privilege to taste it.”

In appearance the Singleton is a dull gold with khaki lights; the deep golden brown of a horse chestnut, with good long beading. On the nose there is a mild nose-feel and a very fragrant aroma. Heady top notes of scented hand-cream and rose water, with a suggestion of candlewax. Rich, sweet-scented and fruity, with exotic tropical and berry fruits in the middle, on an aromatic base with notes of dried lavender and hot sand. Sweetness backed by a hint of scented leather. With a drop of water, a creamier fruity note appears, supported by base notes of sandalwood and hemp ropes. The body is light, and slightly oily. The palate is delicate and ethereal in texture. Sweetly fruity overall, with dried figs and a suggestion of toffee, then mint fresh and mouth-cooling. Pleasingly, the dried fruits become richer in the mouth. Like a spiced dark fruit Christmas cake delivered in an old wooden baker’s box. Much sweeter and quite menthol-clean with water, when the spiciness evolves into a balancing bitterness. The finish is long, sweet and elegantly drying. Warming too, with a faint suggestion of smokiness and powdered ginger in the aftertaste. Gradually the rich fruitiness asserts itself again. As it fades away, the dryness returns. With a little water the palate is left positively minty.

About Singleton

The Singleton of Dufftown was built during the reign of Queen Victoria. And though the traditional methods, centuries of craft and ancient water source remain, Dufftown – the smoothest of the family of three – is on a mission to create new, great tasting Single Malt Scotch Whiskies that burst with flavour. Over half of Scotland’s malt whisky distilleries are found on Speyside, and Dufftown distillery is at the centre of this fertile region, caught between mountains, rivers and sea. With water so pure, rival distillers of old tried to divert its course; Dufftown produces a sublime collection of Speyside expressions which form part of the wider The Singleton family. The 1890s saw a boom in the Scotch whisky trade, and the establishment of this – Dufftown’s sixth distillery at the time – by Peter MacKenzie and Richard Stackpole. The two converted an old saw mill and, despite a few wranglings over the distillery’s water supply, set about producing a whisky so popular that it survived the whisky crash of 1898, the US Prohibition Act of 1920, and thanks to Arthur Bell and Sons, the great depression of the 1930s to become a global brand, known for its accessible, balanced taste. Rounded, rich and sweet in nature, The Singleton of Dufftown is often described as possessing an exceptional smoothness, although the new-make spirit from its three pairs of stills runs spicy in character. Using a combination of American and European Oak casks at roughly a 50/50 split, the finishing rounds off that edge – evoking in some expressions nuttier, cereal notes of this Speysider. Nutty overtones, with summer fruits, honey, vanilla and even coconut mean these whiskies taste superb neat.
