Vintage Report: Germany 2018 – Bathed in Sunshine

Germany’s 2018 vintage is one that will go down in the records books for several reasons. It is possibly the biggest, almost certainly the earliest, and very likely one of the driest on record – a vintage that saw almost uninterrupted sunshine from May until harvest started in mid- September.

Most regions had one or two refreshing rain events during the growing season, but otherwise it was sunny, warm, and overall, exceptionally dry. There was no frost, and almost nothing lost to hail – the most notable exceptions being two of Klaus-Peter Keller’s top sites Morstein and Abts E, both of which had their production trimmed by around one third by a severe hail storm on the 1st June.

Last week we welcomed guests to the New Club in Edinburgh for a Portfolio tasting, our first tasting in Scotland for two years.

With views overlooking Edinburgh Castle, the top floor rooms at the New Club provided the perfect setting to showcase a snapshot of our 3,000 strong portfolio. It is always a daunting process for our Buyers to pick a broad sweep of bottles to show clients at our tastings, representing some of our best and brightest producers, however, with more than 100 wines opened from across France, Germany, Spain, Austria, South Africa, Champagne, America, South America, Australia and New Zealand, there were plenty of old favourites and new gems for guests to discover.

Germany’s greatest winemaking regions make for an extremely memorable visit, particularly when, as was the case last week, the October weather is providing blue skies and sunshine from day break to sunset. 

Conditions as harvest approached were near perfect – warm yet fresh days and cool nights of low single-figure temperatures.  It was to be the largest group of employees we have ever taken abroad, testament to the great love the Justerinis team has for top quality German wine.

Germany's great wine making regions make for a glorious buying trip when the sun is shining. When we arrived in the middle of June the sun unfortunately wasn't. 

Indeed, parts of the Rheingau had recently seen serious flooding. But nevertheless, the growers we visited, the elite by anybody's books, were cheeringly upbeat. As Carl von Schubert put, 'Riesling is the most innovative weed there is, capable of coping with even the most inauspicious of seasons'. The universal sentiment was that 'The vines maybe two weeks behind but they'll catch up. Nothing to worry about'. Plus ça change from the slightly more pessimistic 2013 outlook in other parts of Europe. By the time we left, temperatures well into the 30s seemed to confirm their optimism.


But of course, we were there to look at the 2012s; an unusual growing season that has produced a range of startling wines with characters and qualities that are almost incomparable in recent vintages.

I am much looking forward to our German Riesling 2011 tasting & offer next week.  

We have delayed the tasting this year until September so that we can show for the first time the Grosse Gewachs and the current JJ Prum vintage (June is always too early for them.)  Another wine got added to the team sheet this week, an uber fine Herrenberg Auslese Fuder 15 2011 from Carl von Schubert of the old monastic Maximin Grunhaus estate in the Ruwer.  It had not been bottled when I visited the estate back in May so I was unable to taste it.  A very different wine to Abtsberg, the redder slate soils make for a less powerful, mineral but finer and fresher Riesling than the grey blue slate of Abtsberg.  They will go shoulder to shoulder next week and should provide a startling contrast to each other.
