The World’s rarest Rieslings: Lots from the VDP Auction

The World’s rarest Rieslings: Lots from the VDP Auction

The German VDP Auctions, which happen every September, see the great and the good of the German wine loving world descend upon the towns of Trier and Bad Krueznach for a total of three Auctions covering off the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Ahr, Nahe, Pfalz and Rheinhessen regions.

Many come merely for the experience of tasting these gem like wines, others to place bids in the hope of securing a few precious bottles.  The buzz is palpable; these auction bottlings represent the finest wines produced in a given year by the greatest estates in Germany.  And in a vintage like 2015, these high peaks are clearly something to aim for.

Which is why, in mid-September I visited the picturesque town of Trier to re-taste many of the astounding Auction wines we’d first tasted in July, before attending the Grosser Ring Auction in person to place our bids. We had success with a number of lots and our offer will be out shortly. The wines are brilliant so we are excited about being able to offer these great wines to those unable to attend the auctions. The only downside is that quantities are generally minute. That said, those that are lucky enough to secure a case or two will be putting something exceptionally rare into their cellars – definitely something to be treasured in years to come.  The superior quality of the auction bottlings means that by definition these wines are produced only from the very finest selections of grapes – as a result they all offer something fairly extraordinary.

Germany’s 2015 Rieslings – Cool crystallised sunshine

After a week spent tasting samples across Germany’s finest regions there is no doubt in my mind that 2015 is a very special vintage indeed.

The vintage’s weather patterns can be summed up as follows: a mild winter followed by an early flowering. Warm, at times hot early season weather; July and early August hot and dry, worryingly so at times, then a cool veering on cold September with bountiful and welcome rain. Finally, a fine, very dry October with plenty of sunshine but cool days and cold nights, providing steady slow late season ripening and very little loss of acidity.
