Here Comes the Sonnenuhr

Here comes the sun (doo doo doo)
Here comes the sun, and I say
It's all right

If there was such a thing, then The Beatles’ 1969 single “Here Comes the Sun” is surely the soundtrack for vintage 2018 in Germany.

A Portfolio Tasting in Scotland

A Portfolio Tasting in Scotland

by Alasdair Lawson-Dick

Last week we welcomed guests to the New Club in Edinburgh for a Portfolio tasting, our first tasting in Scotland for two years.

With views overlooking Edinburgh Castle, the top floor rooms at the New Club provided the perfect setting to showcase a snapshot of our 3,000 strong portfolio. It is always a daunting process for our Buyers to pick a broad sweep of bottles to show clients at our tastings, representing some of our best and brightest producers, however, with more than 100 wines opened from across France, Germany, Spain, Austria, South Africa, Champagne, America, South America, Australia and New Zealand, there were plenty of old favourites and new gems for guests to discover.

The Vintage Report: Germany 2017

The Vintage Report: Germany 2017

Surprisingly good 2017s…a vintage to woo and charm, from intense Grosses Gewachs, to kaleidoscopic TBAs….

2017 was a vintage that threw up its fair share of challenges across Germany’s various winemaking regions– a summer like spring causing a super early start, frost, troubled flowering, hail for the unlucky, and early onset botrytis forcing a highly selective and early harvest.  Despite these conditions the ingenious Riesling grape, particularly in the hands of Germany’s greatest growers, by and large fared amazingly well. There are very many wines here that will not look out of place when viewed next to their sibling vintages of ’16 and ’15 – albeit in a markedly different style. And after all, isn’t that why we buy these wines year in and year out?

Germany 2016: Welcome to Wiesbaden…

The annual preview of the latest VDP Grosses Gewachs (GGs) in Wiesbaden is widely considered the best and most comprehensive dry Riesling tasting in the world.

Invitations are scarce and attendees hand-picked to ensure that the Kurhaus Kolonnade is for three days a year filled with the world’s leading German wine experts. Justerini & Brooks was privileged to be invited this year to join for an in-depth look at the latest releases from all over Germany.

With impeccable organisation, the tasting is conducted in perfect conditions. Approximately 500 wines are submitted for tasting, comprising all the major German grape varieties, meticulously arranged in flights organised by region, village and individual vineyards. Over the three days, I focused on 2016 GG Rieslings from the Nahe, Rheinhessen and Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, as well as the latest 2015 Spatburgunders from the Rheingau, Baden and Pfalz.

Harvest Report: Schloss Lieser

by Justerini & Brooks

With harvest completed at the end of November, 2016 is shaping up to be a delicate, precise and well-balanced vintage at Schloss Lieser.

They share their first impressions of the new vintage with us. "we had quality and quantity, but this was an intense harvest time." "May and June were very wet and we did not expect such healthy grapes."  "The weather turned in June - August and after a warm, sunny September with no humidity, we began harvest on the 10th October."
