Justerini & Brooks invites you to a Germany 2019 Webinar

Featuring Joh. Jos. Prüm, Fritz Haag, Schloss Lieser, Maximin Grünhaus, Willi Schaefer and Forstmeister Geltz Zilliken

Germany’s 2019 vintage is clearly rather special and has even been described as a potential “vintage of the century” by Michael Schmidt. From best-ever estate wines, to aristocratic Grosses Gewächs, and many a luscious-yet-lively sweetie, we’ve tasted some truly thrilling wines while putting our 2019 offer together. Stylistically it is a hard year to pigeonhole as overall the wines present a wonderfully complex and somewhat rare blend of intense minerality married to ripe acidity. As Frank Schönleber noted, the wines have “the flavours of a cool vintage allied to the structure of a warm vintage” - a decidedly delicious combination and one that is guaranteed to win many friends in the years to come.  Many growers likened the vintage to 2015, though with slightly less extract, less punch, and more classicism. It is in short, a vintage of wonderfully balanced, complex wines that showcases Riesling's finest attributes. You can read the full vintage report here.

Riesling’s Reign

Germany’s 2019 vintage is clearly rather special and has even been described as a potential “vintage of the century” by one commentator. However, had this label been bandied about at harvest time you’ve have been hard pressed to find a grower to confirm that view – over repeated zoom calls during the summer I was met with surprise and delight at how the vintage has turned out. From best-ever estate wines to aristocratic Grosses Gewächs, and many a luscious-yet-lively sweetie, there are some truly thrilling wines in this years’ 2019 offer. Stylistically it is a hard year to pigeonhole as overall the wines present a wonderfully complex and somewhat rare blend of intense minerality married to ripeness. As Frank Schönleber noted, the wines have “the flavours of a cool vintage allied to the structure of a warm one” - a decidedly delicious combination and one that is guaranteed to win many friends in the years to come.

Germany 2016: Welcome to Wiesbaden…

Germany 2016: Welcome to Wiesbaden…

The annual preview of the latest VDP Grosses Gewachs (GGs) in Wiesbaden is widely considered the best and most comprehensive dry Riesling tasting in the world.

Invitations are scarce and attendees hand-picked to ensure that the Kurhaus Kolonnade is for three days a year filled with the world’s leading German wine experts. Justerini & Brooks was privileged to be invited this year to join for an in-depth look at the latest releases from all over Germany.

With impeccable organisation, the tasting is conducted in perfect conditions. Approximately 500 wines are submitted for tasting, comprising all the major German grape varieties, meticulously arranged in flights organised by region, village and individual vineyards. Over the three days, I focused on 2016 GG Rieslings from the Nahe, Rheinhessen and Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, as well as the latest 2015 Spatburgunders from the Rheingau, Baden and Pfalz.

Wine dinner at Oxleaze Barn, Gloucestershire

Luckily our Cotswold barn scrubbed up suitably well for a Justerini & Brooks’s private customer dinner. The setting couldn’t have been more perfect, the location was a beautiful farm in the Cotswold countryside, and the evening sun was out.

As the great and the good from Gloucestershire arrived and sipped on Pol Roger 2006 and Gusbourne Estate Blanc de Blancs 2012, Andrew Kojima, a masterchef finalist, was preparing our delicious Japanese fusion style dishes for the night.

I had been looking forward to this for a long time, I was a little nervous too as it was my launch with Justerini & Brooks in the South West (having done 14 years with them in Scotland) so there was a bit hanging in the balance as they say.  Luckily I had the support on the night of Hew Blair the Chairman!

The guest list was strong, the wines were exciting, and the food was fresh and fashionable. After my introduction to Justerini & Brooks, and a little talk about Gusbourne and Pol Roger, thirty of us sat down to a stunning table set with glasses, flowers and surrounded by the rustic charm of the barn. This was definitely a cool place to hold a fine wine dinner.

Germany’s greatest winemaking regions make for an extremely memorable visit, particularly when, as was the case last week, the October weather is providing blue skies and sunshine from day break to sunset.

Conditions as harvest approached were near perfect – warm yet fresh days and cool nights of low single-figure temperatures.  It was to be the largest group of employees we have ever taken abroad, testament to the great love the Justerinis team has for top quality German wine.
