While Italy's reputation as a wine-growing region is undoubtedly built on history and the legacy attached to names like Barolo, Chianti and Brunello, there are also amazing things happening across the rest of the country. A quick look at Tenuta Delle Terre Nere on the north face of Mount Etna and at Rocca del Principe, who are making outstanding Fiano from the prime Arianiello Hill in Lapio, Campania - for example - and it is clear the quality and diversity of Italian wines has never been better. In fact, it's improving year after year. New artisan producers keep popping up onto our radar, passionate growers who make utterly compelling wine from indigenous varieties in far flung corners of the country. These are exciting times indeed.
Piedmont 2019 promises a raft of vertical, nuanced Barolos and Barbarescos that will thrill Nebbiolo lovers from the first encounter. Initiating a trio of potentially outstanding vintages, 2019 has a toned, energetic character with a gravitas and vitality to the fruit that in our view most closely resembles the exceptional 2013 vintage at the same stage.
A week of tasting the new releases in Piedmont at some of region’s best addresses revealed a 2018 vintage that is seductively charming and instantly likeable. Very different in style to the richer, more concentrated 2017s but, in our view, a step up.
If there is a vintage that epitomises the dedication and brilliance of Piedmont’s current generation of wine producers, then it is surely 2017. It was a year that may live long in the memory for the growers; the season was challenging, to say the least, but through adversity they triumphed.
