It’s been a long time coming, but with the 2022 Pinot Noirs we finally have a vintage big enough to light up Storm Wines as one of the best cool climate producers around.

For years, this has been a favourite amongst canny buyers (including lots of wine merchants), who crave the sumptuous qualities of the plateau, but don’t want to pay a Pomerol premium.

Owned by the Bouygues Family, and managed by the team from Montrose, Tronquoy has become the latest success story to emanate from St Estephe.

The wines produced from this difficult site are the most crystalline, mineral, and complex of the Rhys range.

We simply adore the estate’s sumptuous 2019 Bolgheri Superiore – a wine that offers classicism and generosity in equal measure, like a Bordeaux with a healthy Mediterranean glow.

Our resident Champagne expert, Jules Campbell, likens this to a young 1995 DP, a vintage that had precocious appeal, blossomed in later life, and is still going strong.

Racy, varietal and lip smacking, marking a return to a cooler style of vintage that will appeal to those who enjoy electric Sauvignon Blanc with energy and edge.

The delicious Domaine de L’Ile Rosé, is flush with wild red berry fruit and sea salt characteristics.

A wonderful combination of pure, floral infused fruit and fine minerals, glorious velure textures, supported by perfectly formed tannins.

Champagne of the highest order, guaranteed to give pleasure now, or at any time over the next 10 to 20 years.

We loved its cool, composed, classy character. So assured and refined – a truly remarkable wine, which collectors will be able to savour and debate for decades to come.

The aromas are always alluring, the texture always velvety and caressing, and the finish detailed, bright and refreshing. It ticks all the boxes and some.

Over in the Pessac corner of Bordeaux we have a red-hot challenger in the form of Haut Bailly. Under the watchful eye of Véronique Sanders, this much-loved chateau has elevated through the ranks

The most convincing example to date with an exquisite core of fruit, encased by fine grained tannins and racy acidity. Neal Martin describes this as “a very fine, cerebral L'If.”

After a spell in the wilderness, Gruaud is back on form with a magnificent example. In fact, for some in the group, this was second only to Leoville Poyferre in St Julien.

A year on from release and the 2022s from Germany are finding their feet, showing a more slender, light-footed impression with accessible fruit and fresh flavours.

As one would expect, this is the personification of charm, with unimpeachable tannins and the most ravishing texture.

This is a tender, pure and delicate range that will delight in the glass. The Alessandria wines also provide the perfect opportunity for Pinot Noir lovers to fall for the lifted, silky, expressive charm.
