    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note
Château Brane Cantenac, 2ème Cru Classé, Margaux, 2019

Brane Cantenac is on tremendous form but doesn’t always receive the plaudits it deserves. It is arguably the best value Second Growth in the market, often rivalling their more venerated neighbours, Palmer and Rauzan Segla in blind tastings. Anyway, we are big fans of Henri Lurton’s home chateau; there’s a class and generosity to the wines, which makes them engaging even in their youth, although make no mistake, these wines mature with grace and charm. Initially a little reserved, then after some coaxing there’s that tell-tale Margaux florality interspersed with pure bilberry and subtle aromas of spice and cedar. The palate is seamless, waves of gloriously silky fruit coat the palate, yet there’s no perceptible weight, it’s totally effortless, just pure, fragrant crème de mûre fruit, sleek and seductive, framed by perfectly measured tannins. This is a wine that keeps growing in stature in the glass; engrained with classical reserve, but with enough sweet, silky textured fruit to make it really alluring. Fabulous! 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, 1% Carmenère, 1% Petit Verdot

One of the few with violet reflections to the ruby body, with austerity and cool vintage expression of blueberry and raspberry fruits, well defined and sculpted, good juice and lift, impressive purity and power, with a sandalwood swirl of 100% new oak for ageing. Harvest September 23 to October 7, 41hl/h yield.

The 2021 Brane-Cantenac is composed of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot, and 1% Carmenere, harvested from 23 September to 7 October and with 11.3% press wine in the blend. Deep garnet-purple colored, it leaps with vibrant notes of ripe black and red plums, boysenberries, and warm cassis, plus wafts of cedar chest, wet slate, and bay leaves. Light to medium-bodied, the palate is soft and refreshing with a good intensity of earth-laced black fruits and a mineral-tinged finish. pH 3.66.

The first thing that I notice on the 2021 Brane-Cantenac is that the color is conspicuously deeper than that of the Deuxième Vin. The nose has exquisite, very pure and delineated scents of raspberry and blackcurrant, with a touch of pencil box and cedar. There is almost a Burgundy-like allure to these aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. Classic in style with a clean bead of acidity, there is a noticeable saline/estuarine aspect to this Brane. It’s focused and poised with quite a peppery finish (more-so than out of barrel). Whilst it has no desire to match the imperial heights of other recent vintages, this will allow for perfect drinking over the next 20-odd years. Excellent.
