Château Picque Caillou
Château Picque Caillou, Pessac Léognan, 2017
justerini & brooks tasting note
Pauline Calvet's Picque Caillou is a perennial favourite of ours. Situated between Haut Brion and Merignac airport, this chateau makes a habit of outclassing far more illustrious names from the Pessac commune. Produced from 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot and aged in 34% new oak barrels, the bouquet is bright and floral with notes of cherry, raspberry and hints of iris. The palate is ripe and sumptuous with an impressive depth of fruit. Lots of cassis, damsons and suggestions of graphite fill the mouth, supported by beautifully judged tannins. This is already a joy to drink and will continue to evolve until 2030 and beyond. As ever, Pauline has produced a really attractive, composed claret.
