Clos de Vougeot, Grand Cru, 2020
Unusually for the cellar, in 2020 Clos de Vougeot was the first vineyard they picked, in late August. On this showing it appears to have been a good decision, as the traditionally full, rotund style of Clos de Vougeot is offset by red plum skins, cherry stones and sweet hedgerow fruits, building in to mint and wild herbs. Seductively creamy and full and produced in a ripe, open-hearted style there is nevertheless plenty of interest and flavour intensity to embrace. The domaine has 1HA of vines, spread over two lieu-dits in the northwestern corner of the vineyard, “Plante l’Abbé” and “Quartier de Marei Haut”, in the sector called “des Papes” – owing to the fact that the produce from this sector was traditionally reserved for the Popes of Avignon. Fully destemmed and aged in 80% new oak.
critic reviews
The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru had the highest sugar levels in this vintage, so this was the first cuvée to be picked on 24 August. It has a very expressive nose, very pure and without any stems, it still imparts an attractive spiciness. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, nicely poised with a harmonious and mineral-driven finish. Excellent.
