As ever you always get extra density, dimension and length here. Weighty, statuesque Premier Cru, with a depth and strength that is verging on Grand Cru in quality. Rich, honeyed fruit but earthy at the same time. Complex, concentrated and brooding. There is a lot of wine beneath the surface here that needs coaxing out of the glass. Sauzet's example of Combettes is one of the great Premier Crus of Puligny, up there with Caillerets and Leflaive's Pucelles. From 50-65-year-old vines in the well-exposed Combettes vineyard. The 2023 Puligny-Montrachet Les Combettes 1er Cru has another riveting bouquet with notes of white peach, orange pith and crushed limestone. It is intense but very elegant and delineated. The palate has exquisite balance and a little more rondeur compared to others. A touch more spiciness emerges toward the finish, with perhaps the longest aftertaste. This is superb.
