Clos des Goisses, Brut, LV, 2001
A blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, it is vinous and complex, full of tertiary character yet still imbued with pungent fruit flavours – dried apricot, brûléed apple, candied peels, bergamot – as well as almond and pecan, truffle and honeyed, soy-like umami notes. Anyone who appreciates aged Champagne will adore this iteration.
critic reviews
Soft burnished gold in colour, charming and enticing, quince and apricot pit, white flowers, elderflower, gunsmoke, cold ash, brioche, gentle and enjoyable. 4.5g/l dosage, Philipponnat Champagne owner. Thierry Garnier winemaker. 5.8ha.
The 2001 Extra-Brut Clos des Goisses L.V., disgorged à la volée, is shaping up to be another fine Champagne in Philipponnat's L.V. series. Medium in body and quite open, the 2001 looks like a wine that will offer its best drinking over the next handful of years. Apricot, pear, marzipan, baked apple and a kick of reduction from long aging on the lees are some of the signatures. This is a terrific showing in a year that posed significant challenges in the vineyards.
