Barolo, Riserva, Bricco Voghera, 2007
This is a riserva that is only made in the very best vintages, 2004 was the last year it was made. From the top of the Voghera hill in Serralunga where Azelias parcel is 80 years old. The soils are a mix of clay limestone and marl (marl is a white, dry and poor compact clay difficult for vines to penetrate.) Only 3000 bottles are made a year from their 0.9ha. The wine is aged for 4 years in large slavonian oak "botti" and two years in bottle . Corpulent powerful but silky. Expansive, voluptuous flavours of warming dark fruit, liquorice and dark chocolate. Alluring rounded and smooth with a particularly strong mineral component, rather than acidity, that provides the wine's freshness. This stony, savoury element gives the wine tremendous balance, offsetting the sweet dark fruit and mocha notes. Bold and Impressive.
critic reviews
A refined, sensual wine for Serralunga, the 2007 Barolo Riserva Voghera Brea, from vineyards in Serralunga, flows across the palate with layers of soft, sensual fruit. This is a bit reserved for the year and less fleshy than most 2007s, but it has good depth and plenty of harmony. The Riserva was aged in cask.
