Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Domenico Clerico, Barolo, Ciabot Mentin Ginestra, 2006

Aged for 26 months in barriques, 80% of which were new. A big, burly wine of enormous fruit, depth and savoury complexity. This is monumental and brooding, it should reward decades of cellaring, though very powerful it has a bright red fruit and mineral lift to balance off the deep dark chocolate, bramble, cassis, Asian spice, and Victoria plum richness. The finish is long and detailed, the focus being more on juiciness and freshness than the powerful attack with strong, lingering redcurrant notes.

Antonio Galloni, Vinous

The 2006 Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra bursts onto the palate with gorgeous, well-delineated aromas and flavors. This is an especially chiseled, finely sculpted, yet exotic Barolo endowed with extraordinary complexity and mouth-filling intensity in its ripe dark plums, mint, violets, sweet spices, soy, tar and minerals. In 2006, the Ciabot combines elegance and power to a degree that is exceedingly rare. It is another superb and truly special Barolo from Domenico Clerico.

Domenico Clerico

Domenico Clerico

In 1977 Domenico Clerico decided to leave his job as a salesman in order to work full time in his family’s estate. After several experiments in the cellar, Domenico’s friends persuaded him to make wine on a permanent basis. Vineyards were purchased in some of the most interesting crus of Monteforte: Ginestra in 1983, Pajana in 1989 and the last, Mosconi, in 1985. Domenico, who tragically passed away earlier in July 2017, is of the region’s great legends, as an advocate for the modern Barolo winemaking philosophy of short maceration and ageing in barriques. The wines display polish, structure and - most importantly - balance.
