Barbaresco, Paje, 2014

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

Stunningly elegant. This floats seamlessly across the palate. Beautiful and driven. Such persistence and elegant intensity. Small tight packed, fresh red alpine berry flavours mixed with a mouthwatering sapidity and minerality. Long, focused and haunting. The Paje vineyard is an ampitheatre in the centre of the Barbaresco commune facing south west and planted on limestone soils, sitting just below Rabaja. Vinified for 60 days on the skins before ageing for 5 years in large used wooden tanks.

The 2014 Barbaresco Paje is probably the most representative wine from the Roagna family. This 1.8-hectare parcel has been in family hands since 1953. Paje (located in the comune of Barbaresco) shows ample structure and power, making a fitting platform to carry its expressive bouquet. Wild rose, lavender, sour cherry, licorice root and plenty of balsam herb lift beautifully from the glass. The wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts and sees five years of aging between wood and cement. This 8,400-bottle release is a true classic from the 2014 vintage.

Cinnamon, cedar, sweet pipe tobacco and leather are some of the nuances that emerge from the 2014 Barbaresco Pajè. Pliant and open-knit, the 2014 is surprisingly open for a young Roagna Barbaresco, which makes it almost shockingly easy to enjoy even now (in relative terms), in what is the very early going by Roagna standards. Even, so there is plenty of Nebbiolo structure and tannin. Sweet rose petal, mint, tobacco, underbrush, game, and sweet red berry fruit add to the wine's stunning allure.
