New Release: Artuke 2022s - The Grand Crus

Artuke are producing some of the best new-wave wines in Rioja. The small, family run estate is now in the hands of the de Miguel brothers Arturo and Kike (their names combined make ‘Artuke’). They have rejected the confines of the traditional aging classifications of Rioja’s Consejo Regulado, preferring to capture the purest and most enticing expression of terroir-driven wines. Working instead with low yields, indigenous yeasts, gentle extractions and old neutral foudres. The focus is on finesse and restrained power, without the dominant influence of new oak.

El Escolladero & La Condenada are the ‘Grand Crus’ of the estate. Both wines are certified organic and aged in well used 600L oak foudres for 12 months. El Escolladero, a high-altitude plot planted in 1950 is a blend of 85% Tempranillo and 15% Graciano from pure limestone soils in Ábalos. The juicier and more structured of the two ‘crus’, Luis Gutiérrez from The Wine Advocate described the 2022 as “powerful but elegant” awarding it 95 points.

La Condenada, planted in 1920, hails from the iron-rich sandstone soils in Baños de Ebro. A field blend of around 80% Tempranillo and 20% Graciano with a small proportion of Garnacha and Palomino, which results in a more aromatic, floral style with slightly finer tannins. The past two vintages have been awarded 100 points by UK critic Tim Atkin, who described it as “one of the world’s greatest reds.” Tim Atkin is yet to score the 2022 vintage, but Luis Gutiérrez from The Wine Advocate has awarded the 2022 96+ points.

Artuke also make a fantastic organic white wine made from Viura, Malvasia and Palomino Fino. Raised in a combination of 50% concrete and 50% 500L used oak foudres, the Trascuevas Blanco is herbaceous and saline in style, with great acidity and texture.
