Like a Bat out of Hell
The taste of this magnificent Batailley is fresh in our memories. Our last encounter was with Frédéric Castéja just last Thursday. As ever, this overachieving Pauillac Fifth Growth is one of the best pound for pound bottles you can buy from Bordeaux.
There’s no messing about here. This is good honest winemaking, which captures the essence of this gravelly terroir. Dark and brooding, this boasts an impressive core of inky black fruit and stony minerals. There’s lots of power and intensity to the opaque core of fruit, enveloped by really sophisticated, ripe tannins. One can probably approach this in six- or seven-years’ time and it will no doubt evolve into a venerable old Batailley over the ensuing decades.
