Bordeaux 2024: Lynch Bages and Smith Haut Lafitte
In recent years, Lynch has presided over some blockbuster wines. This no holds bar approach is impressive, but it’s not for the faint hearted. The 2024 is a return to a more charming and elegant style, still bristling and vigorous, but with a less formidable tannic structure. There’s a natural ease and balance here that is very attractive and suggests a fine future over the next two decades. Fans of “old” Lynch will be delighted. At £360/6, this is also a price from Ye Olde times… This is the same release price from Bordeaux as their 2014, a reduction of 43% in the last two years. You won’t find a cheaper Lynch Bages!
Down in deepest darkest Léognan, the Cathiards have presided over another splendid brace of Smith Haut Lafitte. Their white is typically floral and expressive with a wonderful texture and mouthfeel, and a zippy, mouthwatering finish. The red is less flamboyant and glossy than normal, though still very much a sensual wine with glorious texture. We rather liked it – and it will certainly appeal to those who follow the property.
