BRAGANTINO 2019

9 May 2024

“Quite simply the greatest wine I have yet tasted from Chianti Classico and from this fantastic estate” – Kerin O’Keefe

We are thrilled to launch an all-new Chianti Classico Gran Selezione called Bragantino. Produced by Chianti Classico loyalists Monteraponi, this small artisanal estate of just 12 hectares has a reputation in Italy and the United States that is truly stellar. With this striking debut, Monteraponi are now primed to dazzle British buyers and critics. We first tasted the Bragantino a year ago and were wowed from the outset. Tasting it again yesterday, it was even better than we remembered it; the wine having taking on an even more layered, mineral-rich feel, enhanced by the most vibrant and alluring perfume we’ve ever encountered in Chianti Classico.

Bragantino is a pure, limestone-rich Sangiovese wine. It comes from a single plot situated at 550m elevation on the Monteraponi estate in Radda in Chianti, planted with only top-notch Cepparello clonal material, and aged for 42 months in one large traditional cask. The total production of this wine is just 1,300 bottles and the winery is completely sold out.

A reference to owner Michele Braganti’s nickname as a young man, Bragantino as a concept was conceived in 2014, with Michele aspiring to produce a truly great Sangiovese in purezza inspired by long-aged examples such as Montevertine Le Pergole Torte, Gianfranco Soldera’s Case Basse, and the Isole e Olena Cepparello. With the 2019 they have a classic in the making – and the perfect vintage in which to bottle this new wine. Proudly displaying its origin as Radda on the label (designed by local artist Nino Tirinnanzi, inspired by the traditions of the region), Bragantino is truly a wine of a place. This is Chianti Classico at its most exciting, soulful and vibrant.

Don’t just take our word for it though. Italian expert Kerin O’Keefe is a big fan, awarding the debut Bragantino a perfect 100 points. She is the first critic to have published scores.

"The compelling 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione from Monteraponi is quite simply the greatest wine I have yet tasted from Chianti Classico and from this fantastic estate. The first Gran Selezione and the first 100% Sangiovese ever produced by Michele Braganti, it’s precise and perfumed, with intense aromas of fragrant blue flower, perfumed berry, baking spice and camphor while the elegant, vibrant palate delivers juicy red cherry, wild herb, blood orange and graphite. Showing it’s Radda roots, it boasts saline mineral notes that leave a savoury finish. While it’s still young and racy, it’s already smooth, complete and impeccably balanced with firm refined tannins and bright acidity that imparts incredible energy and great aging potential. What a beauty. Drink 2025-2029. Alc 13.5%."100 points, Kerin O’Keefe.
