The vitality of Le Ragnaie’s Brunello. Never wines of density, more of expression and detail, akin to the finest Barolo and Burgundy, with the new release 2019s they are set to kick on in terms of global reputation and excellence.
In a year that Eric Guido describes as “an embarrassment of riches” for Brunello drinkers, he is effusive in his praise, singling out the Montosoli (97pts) as his top Le Ragnaie wine. Monica Larner of The Wine Advocate awarded top scores to all the single vineyards: Ragnaie VV (99pts), Passo del Lume Spento (98pts), Montosoli (97pts) and Petroso (96+pts), putting Riccardo Campinoti’s Brunellos at the peak of the 2019 pyramid. Certainly, Riccardo’s tense, pared-back, mineral-rich style chimes perfectly with the natural thrill and vivid lines of the outstanding 2019 vintage.
Meanwhile, the “regular” Brunello di Montalcino remains one of the most consistent wines in the denomination and proves pleasurable earlier than the single vineyards. In 2019 it comes primarily from prized vineyards around the subzone of Montalcino and Castelnuovo del Abate, with a dusting of Montosoli fruit.
The whole range this year is spectacular and incisive. In terms of ageing, the single vineyards are best laid down and forgotten about for at least five years, as 2019 will go down as a true Brunello great. Don’t miss out on these stunning wines.
