Great value Claret ready to drink

We are taking the liberty of gently directing your attention to the enhanced selection of stellar Clarets within its ranks – a favoured region for festive drinking.

Take that perennial over-achiever Château Potensac, for example. The 2011 vintage is “à point” as they say in Bordeaux. This has been in a beautiful stage of its development for some years; surprisingly juicy and supple, with supportive yet generous tannins – a proper little claret from the Léoville Las Cases team. Slosh it in a decanter and impress your guests without breaking the bank!

2016s may sound a bit youthful to some traditionalists, however, this much vaunted vintage possesses a silkiness and refinement rarely seen before. Branaire-Ducru’s second wine, Duluc, is a classic St Julien with the added seduction and class of this glorious vintage. Annonce de Belair-Monange is a sensational St Emilion produced by the legendary J P Moueix team. Expect luscious fruits, great definition and oodles of charm. And from the lesser known hills of Castillon, we have an old favourite, La Grande Maye. Father and son, Paul and Cédric Valade always produce excellent value wines, which age with grace. The 2016 must rank as one of their best – these halves are very much in their prime.

Château Laroque in the heart of St Emilion has been reinvigorated by the most talented Monsieur Suire. The plaudits started piling up from the 2018 vintage, but we tasted the 2014 recently, the last vintage before David joined, and were smitten. The class of the terroir shines through with lots of earthy blackcurrants, bilberries and plums. It’s a more dialled down, classical style that will appeal to traditional claret drinkers.
