New Label: Philipponnat Reserve Perpetuelle
Across five centuries, sixteen successive generations, and almost eighty years of perpétuelle Champagne, Philipponnat is a maison where history informs innovation.
With Clos des Goisses garnering much of the attention, you might be forgiven for overlooking Philipponnat's Royale Réserve range, the house staple since 1946 — but it deserves more than a passing glance. After all, the past two decades have seen such a steep rise in quality that major journalists now regularly position these wines at the top of the non-vintage rankings. But all good things deserve an update, and thus a new chapter begins for the NV cuvees at Philipponnat.
Enter Réserve Perpétuelle: a new label that encapsulates the Maison’s motto, “in perpetual motion, naturally” and a name that speaks to the perpetual reserves that sit at the very heart of these cuvees. Incredibly, over 50% reserve wine from two separate reserves bolsters the base vintage in these current releases. This blend is then aged sur lie for three years, more than twice the requirement for non-vintage Champagne. The result? Cuvées of sublime depth and complexity, with a character and quality well above their station.
While [Royal Réserve Rosé has long stood alongside the Brut and Non-Dosé cuvees, it now steps into the spotlight with a label of its own: simply, Rosé. Crafted using the same perpetual blending method, with a small proportion of saignée red wine from Philipponnat's finest vineyards. Think concentration without tannin or excessive weight; familiar, yet distinctly its own.
Philipponnat, Réserve Perpétuelle, Non Dosé, NV, 6x75cl
With zero dosage, this non-dosé impresses with its crystalline fruit, electric energy, and a refreshing, finely etched palate that offers purity without sharpness. Notes of vine flower, lime blossom, and toasted bread, evolving into red fruits, citrus, and honey. Structured and generous, with lingering hints of biscuit and freshly baked brioche. One for the aperitif?
Philipponnat, Réserve Perpétuelle, Brut, NV, 6x75cl
A moderate dosage of 8 g/l, Réserve Perpétuelle Brut offers depth and freshness in equal measure. Surprisingly deep and complete with a fine, fast, and persistent mousse. Crisp citrus, summer berries and biscuit aromas. Offering complex red fruit notes and gentle toast on the finish. A fine companion for poultry, charcuterie, or seafood.
Philipponnat, Rosé, Brut, NV, 6x75cl
Salmon pink in hue with fine, creamy and persistent bubbles. Aromas of cherries and wild strawberries lead the way, unfolding into citrus and grapefruit. The palate is balanced, with bright acidity and a full, fruity finish. A natural match for smoked dishes or pink meat, and surprisingly good with red berry desserts.
