Rall White is a Chenin-led blend that consistently sits among South Africa’s most exciting white wines. At just £170.89 per case of six (or £28.48 per bottle) inc. duty and VAT, it’s a brilliantly savvy buy at a very approachable price.
As the estate’s signature release, the 2022 combines 72% Chenin, 26% Verdelho and a touch of Viognier: a masterpiece of freshness and precision that showcases Donovan Rall’s ongoing quest for finely tuned, cellar-worthy whites. In its earlier iterations the focus leaned toward breadth and opulence, but since 2017 the blend has been refined and streamlined. Each component is matured individually (almost entirely in oak, save for a single concrete egg) and, crucially, no new wood is used.
The fruit for 2022 was largely picked early, resulting in a lively, crisp 12.5% alcohol. Displaying layers of citrus zest, elderflower and crushed stone, alongside hints of earth, delicate essential oils and savoury nuttiness, there’s real complexity and depth here. Donovan himself considers this among his finest efforts to date.
Pour this into a fine Burgundy glass and let it unfurl and evolve…
