Three Great Pinots for the Season’s Best Game
Yesterday marked the Glorious Twelfth, and with it the start of grouse season. There is, therefore, no better excuse to start thinking about the wines that will grace the table over the coming months.
We have selected three particularly fine Burgundies, each with the freshness, savoury character and understated elegance that make Pinot Noir such a natural partner for game. These are wines to drink and enjoy, rather than cellar long term, and with the season now underway, the timing could hardly be better.
Bachelet-Monnot, Maranges, La Fussière, 1er Cru, 2023

Quite possibly the star of the trio for pure value. Bachelet-Monnot have quietly established themselves as one of the most exciting names in the southern Côte de Beaune, and La Fussière is a terrific example of why. The combination of bright fruit, savoury depth and beautifully judged tannins make this an especially compelling bottle for grouse — and at this price, one to buy by the case.
Bruno Clair, Marsannay, Les Vaudenelles, 2023 £206.89 per 6x75cl, DP incl. VAT (£34.48 per bottle)
Bruno Clair's Marsannay is a perennial J&B favourite, and for good reason. Les Vaudenelles sits high in the appellation on white marl soils, giving a wine that is fine-boned, fresh and elegant, but with plenty of depth to stand up to food. The 2023 has wonderful density from the lower yields, with cool and crisp freshness enhancing ripe cherry and crushed raspberry.
Génot-Boulanger, Beaune, Les Grèves, 1er Cru, 2018 £334.92 per 6x75cl, DP incl. VAT (£55.82 per bottle)
Les Grèves is one of Beaune's great sites, and Génot-Boulanger's expression has the combination of ripe red fruit, earthy savouriness and fine tannins to perfectly match roast grouse, other game birds and mushroom-laden autumnal dishes.
Three red Burgundies, three wonderfully different expressions of Pinot Noir, and all eminently suitable for the table. With grouse season now underway, it's time to pull the trigger on some fantastic reds.
