Scotch Whisky for Wine People
Each of these exceptional Scotch whiskies has been finished in wine-seasoned oak, shaped by the character of the wine that came before. While the bottles featured aren’t the exact wines used, they are carefully chosen examples — a look into the style, region, and flavour these casks once held.
Curated by Ethan, our Rare & Collectible Whisky Advocate, we’re showcasing the long-lasting influence of grape on grain.
Mortlach NAS “Midnight Dusk” Special Release 2024 – Ramandolo & Sangiovese Casks Wine: Le Ragnaie Brunello Di Montalcino, 2019
The beast of Dufftown meets the hills of Tuscany — Sangiovese is a grape that can temper Mortlach’s primal force and stand up to its muscular nature by layering on the grip of wild cherries and dried herbs. Le Ragnaie’s Brunello — lifted, precise, and vivid with wild strawberry and sweet earth — brings that same tension of elegance and depth to the whisky’s core.
It's like decanting Brunello beside a fire in a northern lodge: brooding, spiced, and silk-lined. A whisky for the wine lover who likes structure with seduction.
Mortlach NAS “The Katanas Edge” Special Release 2023– Pinot Noir & ex-Kanosuke Oak Wine: Rhys Vineyards Alpine Vineyard, Pinot Noir, 2021
Finished in ex-Pinot Noir casks and touched by Japanese whisky seasoned oak, this Mortlach walks a tightrope between precision and opulence. Pinot Noir’s perfumed delicacy softens Mortlach’s sinewy power — rose petals meet meat stock. Rhys’s Alpine Vineyard Pinot, grown high in the Santa Cruz Mountains, shows the same coiled energy and aromatic lift — red berries, pine forest, and spice-laced mineral tension. It’s Pinot with backbone, just like this Mortlach.
This is a whisky to serve the Pinot Noir purist who secretly loves a steak.
The Singleton of Glen Ord 39yo – Port, Bordeaux & Sherry Wine: Ségla du Château Rauzan Ségla, Margaux 2016 & Graham's, Vintage Port, 1970
There’s an intimacy to this Glen Ord: the perfume of old Port mingles with Bordeaux and antique Sherry. Ségla has the fine-grained tannin and sweet cedar fragrance of great Margaux — all cassis and crushed violets — while the legendary Graham’s 1970 vintage Port echoes the whisky’s rich dried fruits, caramelised fig and walnut oil. Best shared at the tail end of a long Sunday lunch — when plans have been abandoned and the afternoon stretches on, aimless and golden.
Wine collectors will find this as familiar as it is transformative.
The Singleton of Glendullan 14yo “The Silken Gown” Special Release 2023 – Chardonnay de Bourgogne Wine: Bruno Clair, Marsannay, Blanc, Cuvée Source des Roches, 2022
Finished in white-Burgundy casks, this Glendullan floats like chiffon. There’s a creamy hazelnut lift, lemon curd, and baked apple, all underpinned by soft malt and floral oak. Bruno Clair’s Marsannay — chiselled yet generous — shows citrus oil, pear, and flint, gently echoing the restrained elegance that defines this whisky’s silk-spun finish.
If Marsannay is the silk scarf waving from the mast of the Côte de Nuits, this is its whisky equivalent — refined, flirtatious, and beautifully tailored.
Lagavulin 1993, Prima & Ultima III – PX/Oloroso & Refill Oak Wine Parallel: Bodegas Tradición, Oloroso, 1970
A cask-strength Lagavulin wrapped in layers of unctuous PX and dry Oloroso is not a subtle thing — nor should it be. It’s a velvet-smoked opera of burnt toffee, sea spray, and dried figs. The cask’s previous life, with the style of Bodegas Tradición’s 1970 Oloroso is written into every sip: salinity, toasted walnut, antique wood polish, and the slow, contemplative pace of true oxidative ageing.
Those who revere the depth of Oloroso will find this peated icon deeply satisfying — and endlessly complex.
If you appreciate great wine, you’re already halfway to great whisky. These cask-matured expressions offer a familiar language — of place, time, and character — just spoken in a different accent.
