Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Brora, 45 Year Old, Highland, Prima & Ultima, 2023 Release, 1977

This Brora is an unrepeatable gem from the last 3 American oak hogsheads filled from the last distillation of the year on the 15th December 1977. In that cold and unusually dry December, as this last distillation ran into cask, the distillery was reaching the end of what we call its Age of Peat. The peat used at Brora had a unique character, different from Islay malts. It is believed that barley malted over its ‘reek’ gave Brora its classic ‘sweet peat’ style. At natural strength, there is a textbook oily, smoothly waxy texture, while the taste is sweet overall with light saltiness and smokiness, becoming spicier, with Cayenne pepper at the back. Delicious straight. A little water gives a certain sweetness to the taste but is not needed.

Brora

Over the decades, the small distillery of Brora lay silent, set amidst the dramatic landscape of its remote Highland home on the North East coast of Scotland. Its wildcat gates, shut to the world since 1983, have now been reopened and whisky is being made once again.

The myth of a legend had been kept alive only by humble, whispered tales of Brora’s skilled craftspeople, passed down through generations. Now, after a three-year meticulous restoration, the distillery stills have been reawakened.

A cult legend restored to its former glory. Its reputation as a truly special Single Malt Scotch is born of its supreme quality and uniquely rich and peaty flavour profile, combined with its increasing scarcity and finite supply as a ‘ghost’ distillery. Viewed as one of the lost icons of the whisky world, the distillery and whisky gained legendary status during its closed years. Highly revered by whisky connoisseurs, collectors and investors alike, whisky from the original, dwindling finite stocks represents a special opportunity to own a part of whisky history, and from Brora’s most highly regarded era.
