Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Baptiste explained that while the Indian summer did come to the rescue of many estates, he felt that June laid the foundations for quality. He reported average June temperatures a full three degrees above 2005 with very low rainfall. July and the first half of August were cool and there was a distinct lack of sunlight, however, when the Indian summer came, they were still in good shape to produce excellent wine. The late ripening Cabernet Franc particularly benefited from the conditions and we cannot remember a year when the Cabernets have leant such wonderfully pure aromas to their wines. Produced from 44% Merlot and 56% Cabernet Franc, we always expect Lafleur to have gravitas and complexity, but the 2014 has an ethereal quality too. That is not to say that it is in anyway lightweight or feminine, this is still very much a big, brooding, long-term wine, but it just has this sparkle and energy that raises it to a higher realm. The Cabernet Franc really signs with gorgeous minerality, bright red berry fruit and a potpourri of floral aromas. The palate is a gourmand, complex, a melting pot of Sanguinello orange, crème de mûre and tayberries. It is so refreshing and long; easily one of the most profound and persistent wines of 2014 and certainly one of the most complex. Beautiful velour textured tannins caress and frame the fruit; they are ever present, but never obtrusive. An utterly mouth-watering Lafleur!

Provenance in fine wine

When it comes to purchasing wine, provenance is of upmost importance. A wine’s history – where it’s sourced from and how it’s been stored – can have an enormous influence on the eventual enjoyment it provides. At Justerini & Brooks, we can trace nearly every case back to the domaine, estate or Château it originally came from; we ship from over 200 wine producers throughout the world.

Wines not bought directly from the vineyard are either sourced from trusted suppliers, with whom we share the same philosophy and rigour in buying, or from our own network of Cellarers customers. These customers’ wines are stored in optimal conditions in Octavian Corsham and, in the vast majority of cases, have been stored by us since the wine was first shipped. We do not purchase wine from auctions.

We feel it is equally important to for our customers that the case they buy and leave in storage with us is exactly the same case they subsequently have delivered. This may sound obvious and straightforward, yet we are one of very few merchants to have taken measures to ensure this.

We have created a system where every case is independent, thereby ensuring a trail of ownership and peace of mind for every customer.

The Journey

Justerinis ensures that every case of wine stored with Cellarers (Wines) Ltd has a unique identifier and customer’s name, almost unheard of in the industry as it is expensive to administer. These details are printed and placed on every case which is logged and recorded under your account name and kept in the world’s most renowned storage facility, Octavian Corsham.

This information is sent from our systems to the warehouse every day to ensure the trail of ownership is verified and upheld.

While customer reserves are stored in Corsham, our physical stocks are kept in Hoddesdon, further providing a geographical separation between customers’ wines with Cellarers and Justerinis’ own stock.

Further Reassurance

Cellarers (Wines) Ltd is a legally separate limited company from Justerini & Brooks which currently holds approximately £450 million worth of customer reserves. It is fully insured to catastrophic loss. Many merchants will state that wine in their care is fully insured, but in reality this is on an individual case basis with insufficient cover for total loss as this is prohibitively expensive. The cover provided by Octavian and Justerini & Brooks is unmatched.

The 2014 Lafleur has a very seductive nose with red berry fruit, black truffle shavings and touches of meat juice. With lovely delineation and focus, the Cabernet Franc component is very expressive at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied, the Merlot taking over with red berry fruit, white pepper, sage and a tang of orange rind. It fans out gloriously on the finish, and overall, this Lafleur is just entering its drinking window. Tasted at Bordeaux Index's 10-Year-On tasting.

Deep garnet-brick in color, the 2014 Lafleur needs a lot of swirling to coax out subtle scents of forest floor, menthol, and baked cherries, with emerging suggestions of iron ore, incense, and potpourri. The medium to full-bodied palate is packed with seductive red and black berry preserves layers, framed by firm, rounded tannins and bags of freshness, finishing long and minerally.

Concentrated ruby in colour at the 10 year mark, and wow this is good, just mouth-filling black truffle, bilberry, olive tapendade, Cabernet Franc dominant in its floral violet and raspberry leaf curls, standing head and shoulders above most of the Pomerols in the vintage, lord of all it surveys. Has a sense of drama and restraint, then releases a saline juicy finish.
