Kastanienbusch, Riesling, Grosses Gewächs, 2023

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

The mighty Kastanienbusch is lightly reductive with salt laced red berries, flat peaches and a jewel-like sparkling buoyant mirabelle and steely iodine-like finish. Juicy and already immensely drinkable, this is an airily complex GG that culminates in a long, staining finish. Thrilling. The great Kastanienbusch vineyard rises from 150m above sea level to over 300m and is formed of red iron rich soils that are around 320 million years old. It tends to produce complex powerful Riesling that is nevertheless transparent and full of energy. Raised exclusively in stainless steel.

critic reviews

96/100Stephan Reinhardt,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Rebholz's 2023 Kastanienbusch Riesling GG is a fascinating and highly promising wine already at this early stage. It exhibits a delicate, spicy, clear, zesty and pure bouquet of red rock and herbal notes, and it's very precise and elegant, also coolish. Savory and lush on the palate, this is a filigreed, very fine and elegant Kastanienbusch with a medium to full body weight and lots of stimulating layers. The acidity is crystalline and saline, and the mineral expression is very authentic and absolutely gorgeous. This is a giant in a quiet way. Tasted at the Rebholz Kastanienbusch/Christmann Idig/Wittmann Morstein vertical tasting in Westhofen in August 2024.

The 2023 Riesling Birkweiler Kastanienbusch Grosses Gewächs grows on Permian volcanic formations. A hint of passion fruit sets a tropical note on the nose, quite aromatic with a proper crackle of flint. The palate is juicy and has a darker aspect, reminiscent of Reine Claude skins, yet it maintains a lemon edge. Riper fruit glimpses through on the finish, revealing juicy peach and ripest nectarine with a gorgeous bitterness that makes the mouth water. (Bone-dry)
