Château La Grande Maye, Côtes de Castillon, 2018

  Château La Grande Maye

Paul and Cedric Valade's humble Grande Maye is one of our best-selling clarets. It is a firm favourite amongst the Mayfair clubs and savvy customers with an eye for value. The 2018 is produced from 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc and will be aged in one third new oak barrels. It's a dark and savoury Grande Maye with an abundance of mineral infused cassis and loganberry fruit. There are some smoky wood notes, hints of black olive, redcurrant and Valrhona chocolate. Another astonishingly good effort. Drink from 2025.

Contains Sulphites.

About Château La Grande Maye

Situated in the Côtes de Castillon, where the terroir is similar to the higher vineyards of St Emilion, Château La Grande Maye reminds you that Bordeaux is not just about astronomically priced classed growths. The average age of vines on this 18 hectare Estate is 30 years and consist predominantly of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The final blend spends a year in 1/3 new oak barrels and with its ripeness of fruit, grainy texture and complexity offers a value for money the rest of the world would be hard pushed to beat.

Appellation: Côtes de Castillon

These are Merlot based wines, sometimes with Cabernet Franc, that betray a fleshiness and sturdiness that can be drunk 1-5 years after the vintage. The region is named after the town of Castillon-la-Bataille, the battle that brought an end to the hundred years war.

Grape Blend: Merlot | Cab. Franc

Cabernet Franc with its unique herb infused red berry fragrance, adds backbone and acidity to the sensual, round favours of Merlot. This is as tried and tested combination used in the vast majority of serious St Emilion and Pomerol blends.
