Château Talbot

Château Talbot

Named after the Earl of Shrewsbury, John Talbot, AKA “Old Talbot”, a notable English commander during the 100 years’ war, who met his end at the hands of the French over the river in Castillon. Following his death, the vineyards were repatriated after 340 years of British rule. To this day, it remains a popular “British” brand – we are a loyal bunch…

For many years, Talbot, along with neighbouring Gruaud Larose flew under the Cordier banner. They made some spectacular vintages in the 1980s including the magnificent 1982 and 1986. Well stored bottles are still wonderful. The later years of Cordier ownership saw a string of mediocre vintages. Today, this 4th growth chateau is managed by the charming and talented Jean-Michel Laporte, formally of the diocese of Pomerol and La Conseillante. Since his arrival there’s been much improvement. We’ve been really impressed by recent vintages – Talbot is once again back at the top table in St Julien.
