Tasting Note:

This was one of the few barrel samples we were able to taste in Bordeaux, and what a wine it was. Francois explained that it's a bit of a contradiction. Analytically it's a monster with huge alcohol and tannins, however, when you taste it it's all finesse and precision. How right he was. This was one of if not the most enthralling young Tertre Roteboeufs we can recall. It's brimming with vitality and bright red fruits. The texture is pure silk; effortless, moreish, fruit driven, sumptuous and hedonistic, yet balanced, fresh and alive. Francois kindly sent us samples to taste in the UK, and this only confirmed our initial impression, 2019 is a truly great Tertre Roteboeuf, one of the best we have ever tasted. This sample was a bit darker and more cerebral - it's gone into its shell, a brooding and more classical style. Will aeration it starts to reveal its complex aromatics, then sweet kirsch fruit and wild berries. Sumptuous and plush, the broad palate has a wonderful intensity and energy - so alive and vivid with grandiose tannins that sustain the sweet fruit and mineral finish.

“A vintage of character is always the result of rather strange conditions. We try to understand, but it is frequently hard to give reasons for the eventual character of certain vintages; such is the case with 2019. This year’s wine appears to be full of expression, supple, full of ripe and bright fruit, and in contrast to that from a year of great heat and concentration (think 2016). A very fine vintage, packed with personality and its own particular charm.” FM
