Tasting Note:

Jacques Thienpont's St Emilion estate, L'If was presented to us after we tasted the Le Pin and it was by no means overwhelmed. it doesn't have the complexity or the effortless charm, of the Le Pin, but it is a really impressive, quite punchy 100% Merlot cuvee. The Bouquet is perhaps a little more open with an ethereal array of creme de mure, Marionberry, hints of coal and minerals. With more coaxing one can see some florality and high toned cranberries. The core is packed with ripe cassis and there is a real nervous tension between the decadent fruit and the high acidity (pH 3.38, 4.2g TA). The result is a thoroughly engaging, dark fruited wine with long fruit and mineral infused tannins. Very smart.
