Château Capbern Gasqueton, St Estèphe, 2012
This will undoubtedly be one of the best value buys from 2010. Produced by the Calon Segur team, the vineyards lie to the south of St Estephe town between Montrose and Phelan Segur. Good terroir, good wine-making team - sensational result. Tight knit with aromas of damsons, cassis and dark hedgerow fruit. On the palate there is sumptuous cherry and raspberry fruit. The flavours are long and noble with lovely purity and balance. A St Estephe with finesse, superb texture and filigree tannins. 73% Cabernet Sauvignon and 27% Merlot with 10% press wine.
critic reviews
Deep ruby/plum/purple with sweet black cherries, blackcurrants and spice, the wine is medium-bodied, possesses good softness and a gentle lushness to the tannins. Not terribly complex, but its certainly well-made. This should drink well for 7-10 years.
(67% cabernet sauvignon and 33% merlot, 5.5 g/l total acidity, 72 IPT; 13.3% alcohol): Good deep red. Black cherry, cedar and sweet spices on the nose, plus a hint of chocolate mint. Juicy and rather bracing, with hints of spearmint and black pepper lifting the dark cherry and spice flavors. An almost dainty wine, this fresh and very classic Bordeaux features a blackcurrant note on the moderately long finish. A little unforthcoming at present but a good, lively wine, and very successful for the vintage.
