Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Château Capbern Gasqueton, St Estèphe, 2012

Capbern Gasqueton is regularly one of our top value picks, and 2012 is no exception. Cool perfumed nose with a sweet plumy merlot core. 67% Cabernet Sauvignon 33% Merlot with an IPT of 72. Cranberries and cooked strawberries on the palate with nicely managed tannins. Refreshing, cool, cherry juice with some nice herbal influences.

Ian d'Agata, Vinous

(67% cabernet sauvignon and 33% merlot, 5.5 g/l total acidity, 72 IPT; 13.3% alcohol): Good deep red. Black cherry, cedar and sweet spices on the nose, plus a hint of chocolate mint. Juicy and rather bracing, with hints of spearmint and black pepper lifting the dark cherry and spice flavors. An almost dainty wine, this fresh and very classic Bordeaux features a blackcurrant note on the moderately long finish. A little unforthcoming at present but a good, lively wine, and very successful for the vintage.

Château Capbern

Château Capbern

Capbern occupies 41 hectares, excellently situated to the south of Calon Segur and not far from the other leading lights on the appellation, Montrose and Cos d’Estournel. The wines offer very good value for money. They display classic St Estephe minerality, ample black fruit character and in the best vintages will reward ten year’s cellaring. In June 2012, following the death of Denise Capbern Gasqueton, the estate formed part of the €170M purchase of Calon Segur by French insurance company Suravenir.
