Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Le Petit Ducru de Ducru Beaucaillou, St Julien, 2021

Le Petit Ducru is the new name for Lalande Borie and serves as a third wine for Ducru Beaucaillou. Produced from vineyards in the west of the commune near Chateau Lagrange plus declassified Ducru. Since 2015 the wine has found a real personality and charm and also represents one of the best value buys from St Julien. This is predominantly Merlot (80%) and it feels like slightly unripe with a candied blackcurrant jam notes followed by a rather astringent dry finish. We've been fans in the past, but this is probably one to avoid.

The 2021 Le Petit Ducru is composed of 80% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 8% Petit Verdot. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it strolls out with classic scents of cassis and red plums, plus hints of sauteed herbs, tree bark, and graphite. Light to medium-bodied, the palate delivers a good amount of crunchy black and red fruit with chewy tannins and a refreshing finish. pH 3.67. IPT 88.

The 2021 Le Petit Ducru de Ducru Beaucaillou seems to build on that Pauillac element that I noted from barrel. The nose is finely delineated with a lovely marine influence. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, crunchy black fruit and plenty of iodine and brine, exerting a gentle but insistent grip on the saline finish that comes from the top Merlots in the blend.

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou

Ducru Beaucaillou has emerged as one of the most iconic wines from St Julien. In a commune literally bulging with celebrated estates, Ducru Beaucaillou, under the stewardship of Bruno Borie has hit the front of the pack. A true ‘Super Second’, the estate’s vineyards occupy some 215 hectares although only 75 hectares are used for Ducru. These are largely situated to the east of the D2, running almost all the way to the Gironde and some further inland towards Gruaud Larose. The soils around the chateau are dominated by Gunzian gravel and Cailloux. The estate is not all planted with vines and much of the production is used in the second label, La Croix de Beaucaillou and a separate label, Lalande-Borie. The style of the grand vin is flamboyant, polished and is built for long-term aging.
