Château Durfort-Vivens has been under the stewardship of the Lurton family since 1961, when Lucien Lurton acquired it from the Gineset family. Historically perceived as underperforming, this 2ème Cru Classé Margaux estate has experienced a significant revival since Lucien's son, Gonzague, assumed leadership.
The vineyards of this second growth property are situated immediately next to those of Château Margaux. After a period of under-exploitation, winemaker Gonzague Lurton has worked tirelessly to elevate the quality of the wines produced. His efforts have paid off, as the estate's wines are gradually regaining the acclaim they enjoyed a century ago.
Durfort-Vivens's vineyards (comprised of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 15% Cabernet Franc) thrive on gravelly soils mixed with limestone. The vinification process includes approximately 18 months of wood aging, with 30-50% of the barrels being new oak.
The final blend boasts a high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon (82%), the highest among wines in the southern Médoc. This gives Durfort-Vivens its signature blackcurrant and cassis notes, complemented by notable tannins and robust structure. The wine can be enjoyed after about 5 years in the bottle, continuing to develop and improve over the next decade
