Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

This is the wine of their range that has most changed and evolved over the past few years, now a 'petit chateau' that should be sought out and put on your list if you are a Bordeaux lover. Even in a structured year like 2020, the tannins show texture and grip, with juicy, savoury cassis bud, cherry, blueberry, spiced chocolate. It's not generous, but it has freshness and life, and is a thoroughly enjoyable wine. Now 12ha, down from 18ha as they concentrate on the best parts of the clay-dominant soils. From the winemaking team of Château Lafleur. All the Bouchet (Cabernet Franc) at Grand Village is from massal selection at this point.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Independent

The 2020 Grand Village is a blend of 79% Merlot and 21% Cabernet Franc. A very deep garnet-black in color, it swans out of the glass with showy notes of preserved plums, blueberry compote, and chocolate-covered cherries with hints of Indian spices, violets, and tar. The full-bodied palate is rich, concentrated, and oh-so-velvety, delivering mouth-coating black fruits and exotic spices, supported by a lively backbone and finishing with great length.

Neal Martin, Vinous

The 2020 Grand Village was made during an uprooting of what Baptiste Guinaudeau termed the "less interesting" parcels to focus on the best plots of the original estate. This has a very intense bouquet with black cherries, boysenberry and crushed violet scents. Very fine delineation and less rusticity than the vintages of a decade ago. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy yet fine tannins, blackberry commingling with licorice and hints of wild fennel. Insistent grip towards the finish; this is relatively backward and will need another 3-4 years in bottle.

Château Grand Village

Château Grand Village

Jacques and Sylvie Guinaudeau’s home estate is situated in the commune of Mouillac in the canton of Fronsac. Over a third of Grand Village is planted with vines in the best and most suitable plots for viticulture. The rest of the estate is woodland or is used to rear cattle or produce cereal crops. It is an enchanting estate and one that despite its lowly appellation is capable of producing excellent wines. The estate also houses the family’s massale selection nurseries. The healthy virgin soils in a rich bio-diversity provide the favourable conditions to nurture old Bouchet cuttings from Chateau Lafleur.

The same 15 strong team who tend the vines at Chateau Lafleur is responsible for the viticulture and wine-making here. With all the resources and savoir-faire of one of Pomerol’s elite estates at their disposal, it is no surprise that the wines produced at Grand Village are spectacular. From the 2013 vintage, a new cuvee produced exclusively from Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc clones has been bottled. ‘Les Champs Libres’ is a miniscule production that demonstrates the outstanding quality of the terroir and the talent and ambition of the Grand Village team. It is fermented and aged entirely in new Taransaud barrels and marries the intensity and laser like focus of great Sauvignon Blanc to the gunflint and silken texture of something altogether more Burgundian.
