Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Château Langoa Barton, 3ème Cru Classé, St Julien, 2012

Gone are the days when Langoa had to play a very distant second fiddle to Leoville. Recent Southwold tastings have proved this is very much a match for its second growth partner. Harvested between the 3rd and 15th of October, the 2012 Langoa Barton will be shaped from 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc from yields of 32hl/ha. This has a heady bouquet of griotte liqueur; high-toned, floral and peachy, this is a very tight knit example with a good core of fruit and persistent flavours. Lovely balance and purity.

Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

Classic, signature Langoa, evident sandalwood and cedar smoke on the nose, coupled with violet, peony and rose petals flowers, fresh acidities from juicy blackberry and raspberry fruits, still has plenty of grip that suggests you can begin to drink today, but it should improve further over the next 2 to 3 years, and then go for a good few decades. Enjoyable. Tasted also at the chateau in a vertical recently. 60% new oak.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Independent

The 2012 Langoa Barton is medium to deep garnet colored. It features notions of warm cassis, Morello cherries, and dried roses with hints of fallen leaves, mossy tree bark, and cloves. The medium-bodied palate has compelling tension and energy, with ripe, fine-grained tannins supporting the generous fruits, leading to a long and perfumed finish on this beautiful wine.

Neal Martin, Vinous

The 2012 Langoa-Barton has an open-knit bouquet with red fruit and embers, almost ash-like scents, gradually offering a little more cohesion. One of the more opulent Saint-Juliens on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannins. Fleshy, nicely balanced, approachable with a spicy kick towards quite a substantial finish, this Langoa wears its heart on its sleeve and has wonderful tension throughout. Tasted twice at Bordeaux Index's Ten Year-On tasting and blind at the Southwold Ten-Year On tasting.

Château Langoa Barton

Château Langoa Barton

This 3rd growth St Julien estate has been owned by the Barton family for approaching two centuries. It was purchased by Hugh Barton in 1821 and is now managed by Anthony and his daughter, Lilian. Stylistically it is rather less impressive than Leoville Barton, but in recent years it has possessed a bit more punch and longevity. It is a popular Claret in the UK and has a reputation for being well priced.
