Chateau Prieuré-Lichine consists of about 70 hectares planted with 50 % Cabernet-Sauvignon, 45 % Merlot and 5 % Petit Verdot. This relatively high proportion of Merlot is accounted for by the fact that the Margaux appellation is located within a part of the Médoc peninsular where soils have more clay and less deep gravel, and are better suited to the balance of this varietal. Consultant and winemaker, Stéphane Derenoncourt uses vine canopies to enhance grape ripening as well as regular monitoring of the vines which is an environmentally-friendly viticultural approach. After fermenting in concrete and stainless steel vats, the wine is aged for up to 16 months in 50 percent new oak barrels.
