    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note
La Gravette de Certan, Pomerol, 2019
    Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux
This is such a beautiful La Gravette, really one to look out for and recommend. There is lush ripe berry fruit here but also a ton of finesse, and so much Pomerol signature. It will age for a good decade or more, but the plump fruit is already enticing. Unusually this is entirely Merlot, because all the Cabernet Franc is in the main estate wine (and young vines in the world of Vieux Château Certan - that means right up to 25 years old). 50% new oak, 40hl/h. Harvest for La Gravette September 18 to 20.

The 2019 La Gravette de Certan, 100% Merlot, is deep garnet-purple in color. It races out with bright, expressive notions of black cherries, raspberry preserves, and fresh plums with hints of crushed rocks and black olives. The full-bodied palate delivers a lively backbone and nice ripe, approachable tannins with a lifted finish.

The 2019 La Gravette de Certan has a blackcurrant and bilberry scented bouquet, red fruit emerging with time with a touch of damp earth. The palate is medium-bodied with some sharpness on the entry, more grip than the La Fleur de Gay, yet it is missing some length on the finish. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

Alexandre Thienpont’s magnificent Pomerol estate is capable of producing exquisite wines; and they regularly do. The elegant structure of the Chateau, covered in ancient wisteria is a fitting building for such an estate. It is understated, but beautiful, just like the wine. The 35 hectares under vine are planted with 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Franc. The parcels of old vine Cabernet Franc add complexity and structure to the velvety textured Merlots and helps this chateau to excel in challenging vintages.
