Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Domaine de la Folie, Rully, Blanc, 1er Cru, Clos du Chaigne, 2022

Ripe, bold and expressive yet not without a controlling line of gripping acid and extract. Charming and boisterous, plump with fruit but also lit up with energy. Sun kissed lemons, plenty of breadth tapering into a fine mineral finish. This is gaining in complexity and tension year on year. Excellent. Élevage was carried out exclusively in barrels in ’22, of which 20% were new. A due east-facing vineyard on clay-dominated limestone soils.

The 2022 Rully Blanc Clos de Chaigne 1er Cru comes from the parcel equidistant between Rully and Bouzeron at the limit of the appellation. Its marn rouge soils are apparently uncommon in this locality (more common in Corton). It undergoes a gentle pressing, and the barrels are filled at around 1030 density so that the main part of the alcoholic fermentation takes place in barrel, where it matures for 15 months. The lifted bouquet is very aromatic, with white flowers and light praline orchard fruit scents. The palate is marked by a fine bead of acidity, keeping this Rully Blanc on its toes and delivering real complexity and purity on the finish. A very seductive Rully - keep a second bottle handy - you'll need it.

Domaine de la Folie

Domaine de la Folie

An exciting Domaine reborn. Clémence and Baptiste Dubrulle took over at the Domaine in 2010, but the estate’s history goes back three hundred years. It was Clémence’s grandfather that really made the reputation of the Domaine as one of the greats in the Côte Chalonnaise in the sixties and seventies. The Domaine fell on hard times and had nearly gone to ruin until Clémence and Baptiste took over and set about restoring it to its former glory. What a turnaround. The Domaine, based in Chagny, stretches over 13 hectares of Rully, two-thirds of which is planted to Chardonnay and one-third Pinot Noir. Viticulture is sustainable, respecting both tradition and the environment, chemical herbicides are avoided and harvest is manual in small cases. The wines, which are from some of the region’s finest single vineyards, are aged in steel or with oak barrels up to a maximum of five years-old depending on the cuvée. It’s wonderful to see this Domaine fulfilling their potential and showing that of the Rully region for producing, classy, pure wines of huge character.
