2022

Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Domaine de la Folie, Rully, Blanc, 1er Cru, Clos St Jacques, 2022

As you’d imagine the Clos St Jacques displays more finesse to the flavours, a touch more oak control, more tension, and a fine mineral line. While it has less flesh than Clos du Chaigne, it has more tension and length. Pure and sophisticated, with salty freshness and fine citrus fruit that culminates in an electric, focussed finish. Another Domaine de la Folie Monopole. A fine, east-facing stony vineyard of vines aged between 70 and 80 years old. Surrounded by the forest it habitually gives small berries with focussed flavours. Aged in oak barrels, 20% of which are new.

The 2022 Rully Clos St. Jacques 1er Cru comes from shallow soils and has a richer bouquet than the Clos Saint-Jacques. Wild mint and fennel scents permeate the citrus fruit, hints of wild peach emerging with time. The palate is well-balanced with a keen thread of acidity. It is lively and poised, quite minerally, with lemongrass veins and crushed stone on the finish. Impressive depth and persistence, this is a strong follow-up to the excellent 2021 last year.

Domaine de la Folie

Domaine de la Folie

An exciting Domaine reborn. Clémence and Baptiste Dubrulle took over at the Domaine in 2010, but the estate’s history goes back three hundred years. It was Clémence’s grandfather that really made the reputation of the Domaine as one of the greats in the Côte Chalonnaise in the sixties and seventies. The Domaine fell on hard times and had nearly gone to ruin until Clémence and Baptiste took over and set about restoring it to its former glory. What a turnaround. The Domaine, based in Chagny, stretches over 13 hectares of Rully, two-thirds of which is planted to Chardonnay and one-third Pinot Noir. Viticulture is sustainable, respecting both tradition and the environment, chemical herbicides are avoided and harvest is manual in small cases. The wines, which are from some of the region’s finest single vineyards, are aged in steel or with oak barrels up to a maximum of five years-old depending on the cuvée. It’s wonderful to see this Domaine fulfilling their potential and showing that of the Rully region for producing, classy, pure wines of huge character.
