Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Carl Loewen, Maximin Herrenberg, 1896, Riesling, Alte Reben, Trocken, 2022

The Maximin Herrenberg is the iconic site Loewen inherited from the Carl Schmitt-Wagner estate, on iron-rich red slate soils. 1896 refers to the date they can trace these plantings back to. They are likely even older and certainly ungrafted. More herb and spice here, with flickering touches of iodine and salt if you search for them. Again, this has an intricate yet fluid feel with a sheen of airy golden apples, so alluring, with a little grip to keep it all in place. The Alte Reben Trocken comes from the middle and lower part of the slope where the earth is finer. Fermented and aged in traditional German fuder.

The 2022 Riesling Longuicher Maximin Herrenberg 1896 Alte Reben is from a 0.8-hectare parcel of own-rooted vines planted in 1896 on red slate. This is seen as the treasure of the estate. An almost creamy note accompanies the savory apple and peach on the nose. The palate continues with a most enticing creaminess, seeming to soak up all the spice, boldness and concentration and render it into much elegance. This is helped along with slight nuttiness from well-situated newer oak. This is dryer than its siblings at 5.4g/L of sweetness and is a bundled pack of energy, bold but refined. The finish is of lemony nuttiness. (Dry)
