Pettenthal, Riesling, Grosses Gewächs, 2025
As ever, Pettenthal is the more reserved and intellectual face of the Roter Hang. Fine crushed rock minerality, mint, herbs and cool citrus fruits are layered over a firm core of extract and acidity. Long, composed and finely etched, it gains complexity with every moment in the glass. Typically, Pettenthal is the more sober sibling of the gregarious Hipping. The iron-rich slate here forms larger plates, contributing to the wine's signature sense of composure and structure. At 73 degrees, Pettenthal is the steepest vineyard in the Rheinhessen.

The 2025 Riesling Niersteiner Pettenthal Grosses Gewächs only shows the tenderest reduction. The palate is incredibly juicy, a swoosh of pale and yellow peach, beautifully accented with tangerine zest. You almost forget all the saltiness, the tinge of savor underneath. All this exquisite and alluring fruit on show right now comes back to its undeniable core: that savor of the red soil. Give this time; everything is here, it will just take a while to reveal.
