The wine is not long in the glass before red fruit aromas burst forth. Expressive and fragrant but not lacking for complexity, this has complete wow factor straight from the off. A panorama of flavours explode onto the palate, lifted by a limestone quality hemming the fruit and giving the wine focus. There is a savoury mineral complexity to the small wild strawberry fruit; whilst complex savoury notes of herb and dry stone add dimension and make the mouth water. Wonderfully crisp and fine cut this is a gripping and complex wine, whilst also offering instantly seductive aromatics and fruit that echo long into the finish. Stunning. From the middle part of the Albesani vineyard, the steepest part of the hill, and exclusively from old vines planted in 1948 from the original Nebbiolo michet clone. Aged for 36 months in large casks
Piero Busso, with his bright young son Pierguido, is starting to drive quality to greater heights at this top-drawer family Barbaresco domaine. Founded by Guido Busso in the fifties, this domaine is based in Neive and has at its core some fine Nebbiolo vines planted in the Albesani vineyard opposite the winery. The estate's fine holdings don't stop there, however, also boasting parcels in the fabulous Gallina vineyard and Treiso's San Stunet. Winemaking is traditional here, long and slow, up to 45 days maceration on the skins, and ageing is in 25hl slavonian oak casks for two years. These will sweep you off your feet, bewitching high toned pure fruit and floral aspects are their hallmarks. Expressive and seductive, these are wines that have something to say about where they are from.
