Etna DOC is a visually striking wine region, if only because it is to be found on the slopes of Mount Etna; one of Italy´s most famous, and most active, volcanoes. The volcanic soils are key to defining the style of Etna, as are its indigenous grape varieties; the firm, long lived Nerello Mascalese and the softer, more performed Nerello Capuccio. White wines are also produced here using Carricante and Cataratto, sharing the same smoky, volcanic signature. Being one of Sicily´s first DOCs, there are historic producers here such as Tenuta delle Terre Nere, who have been exploring and mastering the unique landscape of Etna for decades.
